Every year, thousands of founders, investors, and operators flew into Zurich and made their way to St. Gallen for START Summit. And every year, a good chunk of them spent the first hour of their trip standing at a taxi queue, refreshing Uber app, or dragging their suitcase through a busy train station — not exactly the headspace you wanted walking into Europe's largest startup conference.
START Summit was held on 19–20 March 2026 at the SGKB Hall, St. Gallen. When you came in via Zurich Airport, it took about an hour to reach St. Gallen. Not far — but how you spent that hour set the tone for everything that followed.
START Summit wasn't just another networking event. It united more than 7,000 participants — founders who were seeking investments, investors who were seeking the next big thing, and corporate executives seeking to soak up what was ahead. The discussions that occurred there were those that people discussed months later.
Such an atmosphere required some type of attention. You were not at your best following a hectic transfer where you had to run after a taxi, haggle a price, or figure out which platform your train departed from with a heavy bag on your shoulders.
A private chauffeur solved all of that before it became a problem.
Grandlane Transfer is a Switzerland-based private chauffeur provider that has been moving business travellers, investors, and executives across Europe quietly and without drama.
Here's what actually matters when you're heading to an event like START Summit:
They track your flight. If your flight from London, Frankfurt, or anywhere else runs late, your chauffeur already knows. There are 60 minutes of free waiting time built in. No panicky telephone calls, no additional charges, no excuses at the door.
They receive you at arrivals with a name sign. You do not need to figure out where to go. You step out, you are welcomed, your luggage is carried, and you are in a premium vehicle. That's it.
The fleet is what you'd expect. Options of Business Class comprise Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. When you are moving around with a group, the Mercedes V-Class serves groups well. The Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 are offered to those who wish to experience a luxury ride. There are also electric options, Tesla and Mercedes EQE, in the fleet.
There are no hidden charges. The price you see when you book is the price you pay. Door to door.
Your privacy is respected. The chauffeur speaks when spoken to. If you need to take a call, prep for a pitch, or simply sit in silence and collect your thoughts before a big day — that's exactly what happens.
The majority of guests arrived at Zurich Airport (ZRH). The road to St. Gallen required an hour or so, depending on traffic and the route. That was an hour you could use.
You reviewed your schedule for the summit. You went over notes before a meeting. You made calls you had been putting off. Or you simply decompressed after a long flight before stepping into a room full of people you needed to be sharp with.
That didn’t happen on a train with your luggage wedged in the aisle.
What people tended to overlook was that START Summit had a Day-0 on 18 March, the day before the actual event commenced. It was custom-made for startups, investors, and corporate participants, and it was where many of the more attentive discussions typically transpired before the main stages became hectic.
Your arrival on the 18th made that transfer at Zurich Airport even more important.
Go to grandlanetransfer.com, enter your pickup and drop-off location, select your vehicle, and confirm. You'll get an email confirmation. No hidden fees, no surprises.
One note worth keeping in mind — during major events like the START Summit, availability fills up fast, and prices can adjust with demand. Booking in advance locks in your rate and guarantees the vehicle you actually want.
Here is what the two days produced.
The headline competition — the START Summiteer Final — drew early-stage startups from 19 qualifying rounds held across multiple continents through the Road to START Summit programme. The grand finale played out live on the Summit Stage in front of the full audience.
ESTER Biotech, a spinoff from Leipzig University's BioCity campus founded in 2022, won the competition with enzyme-based technology that breaks plastic waste down into its original chemical building blocks. The process makes genuine high-quality recycling possible at industrial scale while reducing dependence on fossil resources and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Prize: CHF 250,000 in cloud credits and CHF 10,000 in cash.
Running alongside the main conference, START Hack 2026 brought together hundreds of participants from the United States, Peru, Canada, and dozens of other countries for 36 consecutive hours of building. Real-world challenges were set by PostFinance, Syngenta, Chain IQ, and OST.
The winning team took on Belimo's challenge — transforming actuator data into actionable intelligence for smarter buildings. Their solution turned raw sensor signals into clear diagnostics, uncovering root causes and enabling the right actions at the right time.
The finale was presented live in front of the full summit audience on the main stage.
Seven pitching competitions ran across the two days, producing winners across sectors:
Swiss Sustainable Impact Award: Riverkin — CHF 20,000 equity-free funding and CHF 30,000 in legal consulting
Robotics: Tinamu — Bluelion Startup Membership
Healthtech and Longevity: Orthosens — Scale-Up Masterclass by Creadd Ventures
AI Pitching Competition: Downstream Intelligence — Access to the Merantix ecosystem, mentoring, and a residency at Merantix AI Campus Berlin
EWOR Grand Pitch: Featured standout startups including Tumbleweed, Ghost, and Global Citizens
START Fellowship Pitching Competition: Runni, BioClé, LingoQuesto, and Notary OS — sharing a prize pool of CHF 120,000 in equity-free funding
The START Fellowship programme brings founders from Latin America and Africa to St. Gallen for a four-month accelerator culminating in a live pitch at the Summit. Tomas Vallejo Zangen, founder of LingoQuesto — building AI-native infrastructure for human-led language learning — took home CHF 30,000 in equity-free funding.
Away from the main stages, the Alpine Area brought a different kind of energy. Led by the Canton of St. Gallen and its "Do-it-in-St. Gallen" initiative, the zone featured a working elevator pitch booth, a climbing wall, and a matcha station that became some of the summit's most visited attractions.
The HSG START Accelerator used the moment to officially launch Batch 2 — eight deep tech startups working across cancer detection, brain imaging, drone technology, and compostable packaging.
Notable startups on show included Ionic Wind, an EMPA spin-off developing solid-state cooling technology for next-generation electronics; FlareOn Biotech, whose sensor helps surgeons verify complete tumour removal in real time during head and neck cancer operations; and Roboloon, building lighter-than-air autonomous drones designed to overcome the flight-time and safety limitations of current civil drone technology.
START Summit 2026 served as the launchpad for Giff — the Global Inclusive Founders Fund — unveiled in front of 7,000 people on the Summit Stage.
Co-founded by Hermann Arnold (co-founder of START Global), Swiss parliamentarian Islam Alijaj, Dr. Michael Lorz, and Louise Scarlette Maunoir, Giff backs high-growth startups founded by entrepreneurs who have navigated disabilities, neurodivergence, and chronic conditions. The thesis: founders who have spent a lifetime overcoming exclusion bring an entrepreneurial edge that venture capital has consistently overlooked.
The 30th anniversary of START Global drew the largest gathering of alumni in the organisation's history — more than 150 people. Among those present were the founding members of START, including Bettina Hein, Jan Bomholdt, Hermann Arnold, and Florian Schweizer.
Also in attendance was Moritz Zimmermann, START alumnus and co-founder of hybris software — one of Switzerland's first unicorns — who hosted sessions on the journey from HSG to 1B ARR and on the future of venture capital. All presidents from START's 22 chapters worldwide attended and gathered for a group photograph marking the milestone.
START Summit is two days where every conversation, every handshake, and every first impression counts. The private limo transfer to get there shouldn't be an afterthought.
Grandlane Transfer handles that part so you can focus on the reason you're going in the first place.
